Top 5 Reasons to Start Smoking
Major efforts to stop tobacco use have been underway for a long time.
Most recently, even before the massive public ban took effect, in restaurants and other establishments,
They did not have non-smoking signs to appeal to both sections of the population.
Nowadays, these no smoking signs also feature a picture of a vaporizer,
which means vapes are banned in the same places.
Despite massive research showing that smoking causes an incredible 5 million deaths a year, non-smokers are still persuaded to smoke the first cigarette that can and often does lead to lifelong and dangerous addiction. This doesn't even consider the costs financially.
5 Common Reasons why people buy cigarettes
So why do so many of the population smoke? While there is certainly research to suggest that smoking may be linked to income levels, this certainly does not exclude those in the higher income group from smoking. Celebrities and even presidents have definitely been lifelong smokers.
Mirroring Role Models
As a young, impressionable adult, it is a natural instinct for us to look to those who are most influential. It also becomes natural to reflect on their actions and sometimes their choices. Even if an adult tells their growing teen that smoking is dangerous and addictive, those words mean little if they do it with smoke hanging from the corner of their mouth. It's probably fair to say that the majority of adults work hard to quit smoking before they become impressionable enough to observe and follow children.
It doesn't always have to be a parent, though. Many children are heavily influenced by celebrities and other public figures, and if these figures are often caught smoking off-screen, young adults may try to mirror them.
Pressure from your peers
While this may seem like a 'stupid' idea to the adults we've become, when it comes to those who start smoking during their teenage years, peer pressure is a real problem. We all know that even the most independent kids can get an overwhelming amount of urges to make a bad choice. However, peer pressure doesn't just apply to teenagers, but there are some adults who can be put under peer pressure to smoke. It can be common in work environments where all smokers gather during breaks.
The best tool that can be used in the fight against peer pressure is education. Make sure your loved ones understand the negative effects of tobacco use, addiction, and the other heavy costs of smoking. While there's no way to curb the tobacco industry's advertisements showing that smoking is safe, exciting, or even glamorous, being constantly informed about the real effects of smoking on the body and wallet can be the best warrior we all have.
psychological addiction
Some report that after taking the first test smoke, they feel more alert and also calmed by the effects or actions of smoking. All this 'I need a cigarette' is not really just a pseudo-service to those who can and will find the crutches to support a deeper and fundamental need; their dependence on people, substances, and other elements for survival. Many will continue to view smoking as a kind of 'cure' for their anxiety, depression and even their hyperactivity, rather than addressing the issue of psychological addiction.
The problem is that it is a dependent crutch need that needs to be addressed. Those who cannot solve this mental health problem when it occurs through smoking may not be able to solve it when it turns into another addiction. This does not mean that smoking is a 'gateway drug'. Definitely not. Hundreds of thousands of smokers will never abuse any other drug other than nicotine.
weight control
Although smoking is certainly not a logical method of weight control, it is a definite reason for those who ask why they started smoking. Smoking suppresses many people's appetites, as does caffeine. However, smoking also makes physical activity more difficult so it beats itself as any weight control method.
Anxiety Control
Many smokers, and those who often find it easier to quit, will cite anxiety as a reason they started smoking. This anxiety can be anything from being alone with one's thoughts for too long to those who say they 'just need something to do with their hands' to alleviate their personal or even social anxiety. While this is part of the psychological dependency factor, it can also be a stand-alone problem that other options as simple as a stress relief ball can treat. However, psychological dependence on the underlying causes will require attention to physiological dependence as well as emotional dependence.
While it's definitely not stupid to get into the habit of smoking, in retrospect and considering that we've covered the real issues behind why we smoke, there are certainly reasons why we did it.
